Education should promote deep inquiry and individual autonomy, but often, it has been used as a vehicle for indoctrination. That's what Agustina S. Paglayan, a UC San Diego assistant professor of political science, argues in her research.
Paglayan contends that mass education systems have historically been designed not only to disseminate knowledge but also to suppress critical thinking skills. She believes this approach limits students' ability to question prevailing narratives and develop independent thought.
Through her work, Paglayan explores the implications of an educational framework that prioritizes conformity over creativity, suggesting that such a system ultimately undermines the very essence of learning. She advocates for a reimagining of educational practices that encourages students to engage deeply with ideas, challenge assumptions, and cultivate their own perspectives.
In a world increasingly defined by complex issues and diverse viewpoints, Paglayan's insights call for a critical reevaluation of how education is structured and what its true purpose should be.
